The Plaid Scottie Presents: A Christmas Giveaway!!!

THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED & A WINNER
HAS BEEN CHOSEN

My lovely assistant Vanna Whiskers modeled the giveaway items for me! I seriously love Christmas in the sappiest way possible. Not just because of what it represents to my faith, but also because of family, love, generosity, nostalgia, and all that other sappy world-peace-type-stuff...hehe :)

Plus I love hot chocolate, a crackling fire, and Christmas movies more than is healthy. Our annual movie lineup begins on my birthday every year in mid-November and includes: Elf, A Christmas Story, Miracle on 34th Street (old and new...but old is my favorite...gotta love Maureen O'Hara), cartoon Grinch, Jim Carrey Grinch, It's a Wonderful Life, Family Man, Home Alone, Muppet Christmas Carol, Love Actually, The Holiday, Polar Express, White Christmas and The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe.

But you probably don't care much about that ;) On to the giveaway! Since I'm on a serious holiday baking/potholder kick right now, the first item is a double oven mitt made by me :) I could seriously kiss the person that invented these things. It's so much easier than trying to round up two potholders while the oven timer is frantically beeping at you! Plus it's an awesome lap guard when you're transporting a hot dish in the car.

I made it using my Orla Kiely potholder from Target as a model. It's lined with Insul-Brite and the fabrics are 2-D Yuletide, Kei Honeycomb Dots in Red, and Kona in Rich Red. I used 1/2" bias tape from Joann's for both the binding and hanging loop thingy.

I'd also like to add that I realize not everyone out there is as obsessed with domesticity as I am. So if you find yourself the winner and cooking/baking isn't your bag, you have my blessing to pass this item along as an early Christmas gift to a cook in your life. Seriously! It's cool. :)

P.S. I'm going to post a pdf template for you guys here in a few days so you can start making some yourself! It took me about 2 hours to make this from start to finish (including ironing, cutting, making the pattern, and all that jazz), so it should only take you 45 min. to an hour.

And I'm super excited about this giveaway's fabric bundle! I think it would be perfect for FITF's tree skirt (I plan on making one for myself using most of these prints and some solid Kona...still debating on whether or not I wanna go with white or jazz things up with some red or green). Included in the bundle are: 1/2 yard each of Kona in Rich Red, Grass Green, and Jungle (not pictured...it's on its way as we speak)...and a Fat Quarter each of Reindeer in Snow, Hexagon Dots in Holiday, Groove Funky Star Bursts in Lime, Reindeer in Holiday, Square Dots in Holiday, Lecien Sugar Multicolored Dots, and Funky Rectangles in Holiday.

  2. For a 2nd entry, become a follower and leave a comment telling me so. If you are already a follower, leave a comment to that effect :)
  3. For a 3rd entry, leave a comment telling me your favorite Christmas movie and holiday movie snacks! Someone asked a question about favorite holiday traditions in the Mug Rug Swap forum the other day and I got a little addicted reading about everyone's cute traditions!

GOOD LUCK & THANKS FOR PLAYING!  :)

  20. I start baking traditional German Christmas cookies about 2 weeks before Christmas doing one or two batches every night while I listen to CHristmas music or while watching my favorite Christmas movies! My favorite is still White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't have a favorite Holiday movie exactly... though my whole family has gone to the movies on Christmas day in our Christmas PJs... favorite movie snack -- hot tamales with popcorn. Try it.

    ReplyDelete

  28. Thank you for offering up a fantastic giveaway. I've had potholders on my "To Do List" for holiday gifts, but it would be nice to win one so I don't have to make my own.

    LOL!

  29. Such cute fabrics and the pefect pot holder! My hubby was just saying he wished someone would invent one of these--I had to break it to him that someone had! :) He then, of course, followed with, "Well, why don't you make one?" Sigh. Like I need more projects! :) Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Our new little family tradition is to watch A Christmas Story while pow-wowing on the floor with some homemade cocoa and caramel balls.

    ReplyDelete
  31. That is fabulous fabric for the holidays.

    ReplyDelete
  32. My favorite Christmas movie that you haven't mentioned is National Lampoon's Christmas and you need to eat homemade caramel corn while watching it!

    ReplyDelete
  33. My favorite Christmas movies are Love Actually and A Christmas Story. My hubby has this very rigid set of rules as to which Christmas movie we watch which day. It's totally nuts, but I love him so I play along. I keep arguing that we should watch A Christmas Story earlier in December since it's played 24 hours straight on Christmas Eve (that movie's assigned night). I didn't really see the point in our purchasing that movie if he's going to insist on watching it the one day it's played over and over. My favorite holiday snack is Nutella cookies topped with red and green sugar. Super simple and super yummy!

    ReplyDelete
  34. What a wonderful giveaway! I love the potholder - I've often thought about making my own, but I'm glad I waited because I really like this design. If I don't win, you know I'm going to be making one! Okay, I don't normally promote my own blog when I comment on others' blogs, but since you love Christmas so much you should check out a quilt along I just started. It's for my Christmas Cactus quilt and if you can do a nine patch, you can make this quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I really don't watch many Christmas movies, but I adore Love Actually. Also, I like to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas. I don't have a favorite movie snack (unless you count apples and peanut butter). However, we have a Christmas morning tradition of making Danish Puff (buttery crust, almond flavored cream-puff-shell-like top, finished with a powdered sugar glaze).

    ReplyDelete
  36. Gorgeous Christmas fabrics I would love to win them.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I became a follower in google reader

  38. We always watch ELF on Christmas Eve (just love that movie) "Hi my name is Buddy what is your favorite color?" Classic line. I then drink my husbands awesome hot chocolate.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have so many favorite Christmas movies. My favorite that makes me laugh is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. My favorite that reminds me of my childhood is White Christmas. My favorite that makes me cry is Miracle on 34th Street. My favorite to watch with the kids is The Grinch (although technically it makes me cry to, I just can't get through the "Where are you Christmas" song without breaking down.) And I love popcorn and hot chocolate with any of them :)

  54. hey! visiting from the pillow talk swap! never been to your blog, but i will be following now! also... amazingly cute holiday pot holder! i have not plunged into christmas fabric yet, but i looked at these ones several times! super cute! and... there is no way in hell that the pot holder would leave my sight if it came to live with me.

on the tradition note, coming from a german family, it is a tradition to clean our shoes up real nice and leave them by the fire place the night of dec. 5th, and if everyone has been good, there will be treats inside in the morning.

look forward to reading your blog in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  55. After reading all of the posts, I compiled a list of all the Christmas movies that everyone mentioned, so thank you! I love A Christmas Carol the best! I also love Yes Virginia There is a Santa Claus. A favorite snack at our house is home made toffee. Yummy!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I love these Christmas fabrics. Usually I'm not into them that much because they're so cutesy. But these are really bright and modern.

    ReplyDelete
  57. My favorite Christmas movie is A Christmas Story. It's so hilarious. I don't really have a favorite Christmas snack, but I love oyster stew because my father-in-law used to make it every year on Christmas Eve night before he died.

    ReplyDelete
  58. My favorite movie is the original Scrooge movie, I watch it every year.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I love the fabric in the potholder - I bought some on the weekend and am thinking of the perfect project. I bake, maybe I need to use the PDF templates when it is up!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  61. Awesome give-away! I need that potholder (I usually use old cloth diapers/rags as potholders, which becomes a serious issue when we have company!) Here is entry #1!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Already a google reader follower!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I can't just pick one! My favorites are It's a Wonderful Life, Charlie Brown, and Love Actually. My sister-in-law and I like to watch Love Actually on Thanksgiving evening to kick off the Christmas season. For snacks, we like have spiked hot chocolate, and I love 'puppy chow'--http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/puppy-chow/Detail.aspx

    ReplyDelete
  64. Super cute potholder! I definitely see my self making some of these!

    ReplyDelete
  65. My favorite christmas movies are any of the old school stop motion movies done by Rankin and Bass - Rudolf, Frosty, etc. My favorite character is Bumble! I even have some bumble house slippers I pull out every year! And none of these movies is complete without some cinnamon cocoa!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I love that pot holder! So cute!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Wow, Ilove the potholder, a new potholder is on my desperately needed list oo. So if I don't win yours, I'll be back looking for the tutorial / pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  69. The best holiday tradition we have here is making home-made Christmas crackers with the kids. We fill them with chocolates, lollies, little trinkets etc. Much better than a hat and a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  70. The Scotty is so freaking cute! Great model :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. My favorite movie to watch is Elf... And I'm not much of a baker, but I love white chocolate covered pretzels that are fresh made in my hometown grocery store :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Apparently generosity is also a trait that you practice all year long, not just at Christmas! The potholder is fantastic (and the fabric too)! Can't wait for the pattern!

    ReplyDelete
  73. This year we're starting a new tradition that I'm VERY excited about... we will be having a service advent calendar. One of my little ones is allergic to peanuts which rules out all the mass marketed advent calendars, so I made the advent calendar by Oh Fransson for Sew Mama Sew and we're going to out a service activity in each pocket for 25 days...it should be a lot of fun and help remind us the true reason for Christmas. Sorry, that's gotta be the longest comment on the post...

    ReplyDelete
  74. I love this stuff, Christmas is so fun! I need to start making presents.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I like all Christmas movies. I don't think I have a favorite.
We do have a Christmas tradition, well Christmas eve tradition. My Daughter and I make all kinds of cookies and brownies on Christmas eve so we can leave them for Santa. We also leave a carrot for the Reindeer and a glass of milk. She also gets an ornament each year for Christmas so when she grows up and has her own Christmas tree it will be filled with ornaments from her childhood.

    ReplyDelete
  76. The fabric is fabulous. I would love to make a couple stockings with it :)

    ReplyDelete
  77. My favorite Christmas movie is White Christmas. Love the singing and dancing! I have lots of favorite Christmas snacks. All growing up, we would get together with my mom and grandma and spend the day baking all kinds of cookies and then the next day, my mom, sister and I would do all kinds of different candies. One of my favorites is snowballs. I think they are also called Russian teacakes??

    ReplyDelete
  78. I follow you in my google reader!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Thanks for the giveaway. Looking forward to the potholder tutorial. Those would make great xmas gifts!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Our favorite tradition is making gingerbread houses. For a few years I had people from work come over with their kids to make them - we had up to 40 people in the backyard creating them! Luckily we live in So. Cal so the weather cooperated. Favorite holiday movie lately - The Holiday - cheesy but cute.

    ReplyDelete
  81. What a great giveaway!!! Love your potholder and fabric. Thanks for the chance to win!!!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  84. My favourite Christmas treat is Nanaimo Bars - they are a Canadian specialty - a layer of graham/chocolate/coconut, then a custard icing layer and then chocolate on top. Yum! And favourite Christmas movie - A Christmas Story ...

    ReplyDelete
  85. This Friday at our meeting I shall challenge Angela to a jump-off. If I can actually jump higher than her, do I get an extra entry? Hee-hee!

    ReplyDelete
  86. I am a follower. I follow you. You know, until the age of blogging, this was not considered a healthy phrase. It either indicated an obsessive relationship such as stalking or a suppressive relationship like Jim Jones and his followers.

This is what you get when I read blogs and comment late at night.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Every year my mom would make dozens of different candies + cookies for Christmas. One year I counted 21 different homemade items. We put them all in the dining room and they filled the huge table. It was wonderlicious. (And no wonder all of my family tends to be hefty....) These treats were in addition to the desserts made for the actual celebration. So, along with the special faith-filled meaning of celebrating the birth of Christ, my family celebrated gluttony and clogged arteries.

We didn't really watch any particular holiday movies much growing up, but now my hubster and I have our own special collection. One at the top of the list is Elf. I could even watch it in the summertime. Partly because the elves have a similar diet to my family during the Christmas season. "We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup."

    ReplyDelete
  88. This is such a lovely giveaway! Both the potholder and the fabrics are so pretty, I absolutely have to enter. :D

Super generous as always Kaelin! I can't wait to see the Christmas tree skirt you end up making.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  98. I absolutely love Christmas too! This year we are heading to the beach on Christmas day with a picnic, a ball and two very excited small girls. On the menu? Glazed ham that I've baked the day before so it will be cold, prawns, salad and pavlova for dessert with whipped cream, fresh berries and passionfruit! How I can't wait to be there in the sunshine! I'd be happy to share a delicious recipe for the easiest ever chocolate 'truffles' if you want a snack that will impress...

  99. I can't wait to try out a potholder like this one, but to win it would be even better.

  108. Favorite Christmas movie & snacks:

My actual favorite Christmas movie is Long Kiss Goodnight, but that's not kid friendly. (Die Hard goes on that list, too)

For the whole family, I really like the Bob the Builder Christmas Special & Elf

Anything chocolate makes good Christmas movie treats. But we also like 'shmellies, which are cereal / marshmallow squares (or cookie cutter shapes) but made with generic (gluten free!) fruity pebble type cereal. They're tasty and festive!

  140. My favorite Xmas movie is really a winter movie but they always show it at xmas - it's the animated Frosty the Snowman on TV - I never get tired of it.

And my favorite holiday snack is Nutz & Bolts (Chex Mix). I use my grandma's recipe & make several big batches each year - YUM!

  154. Our tradition is fun for us. When the Lifetime station starts airing "Fa La La La Lifetime" they have Holiday movies all weekend. Sure it's 90% of the same ones over and over, but we love them. It's all about pajamas, snacks and cuddling on the couch. Elf at the moment is our overall favorite movie, with It's a Wonderful Life being my husband's.
